Just one '99' please!

Did you know that next week is ....

National Ice Cream Week
30th May - 5th June!!

I love ice-cream and this has to be my
favourite ice-cream seller

... selling ice-cream on the Norfolk Broads between
Wroxham and Horning.  Next stop Venice!

Unfortunately we couldn't stop the boat we had just
hired for the day!!  The captain hadn't quite mastered
the controls at that point.

As you can see in the photo, it was also very cold (photo taken
at the beginning of May)
.

Ice-cream trivia

The average number of licks to polish off a single scoop ice-cream cone is approximately 50!

On average, each person in the UK eats 9 litres of ice cream every year; sounds a lot but the Scandinavians eat more with the Americans topping the chart at 20 litres per year!

More ice-cream is sold on Sunday than any other day of the week

'99' is a trademark of Cadbury Limited and it is used to describe a scoop or swirl of soft serve ice cream with a Cadbury chocolate Flake in it.
If you only take a few scoops form a large tub of ice cream, protect the quality of the ice cream by preventing air getting to it by scrunching up a few pieces of greaseproof paper and put these on top of the ice cream before replacing the lid.

Today most ice creams contain only around 5% fat and plenty of calcium, minerals and vitamins

What is your favourite ice-cream?

  1. Chocolate for sure. I also like Moose tracks.....do you have that kind?
In Ohio over the upcoming Memorial Day week-end an ice cream factory named Velvet has a 3 day long celebration. I will miss it this year but it is a fun one to attend.

  4. An ice cream boat .. That's fantastic! A friend of mine's grandad was an Italian ice-cream maker and invented the 99. They didn't have cornets then just the sandwich wafers, so he took a flake and chopped the end off and put it down the side. The manufacturers then made the flake the right length. He wan't allowed to patent it as he was told you couldn't patent a number! He called it a 99 because the king of Italy had 99 soldiers in his army and he was the hundredth. His daughter (my friend's mother) appeared on the show Balderdash and Piffle to defend this story as several people laid claim to inventing it. I believe this one though! Another ice cream fact (allegedly) for you! Xx

  8. Ahh, I see I am in line just after the delightful Catkin Tales. We are all here for icecream, Lorraine; most convenient as we are finally have a warm spell here in raindrenched France. The trouble is though that as soon as the sun peeps out again the temperatures soar and the sun bakes down.

Anyway back to icecreams. We have this icecream shop in the old part of Tours which sells dozens of different flavours. I must say that it is a pleasure to stare at the colourful display. Like my eldest daughter I have a soft spot for sorbets: raspberry, lemon, etc. But I really, really like violet icecream which is pretty common now in France. Have you ever tasted it?

  9. Oh my I so didn't know they did this there. I am so going to have to check this out as I love The Broads! I really like Ronaldo at Sheringham - they do a mean Elderflower Sorbet!

  14. I have never seen an ice cream boat before..brilliant! Very interesting ice cream facts, I like the fact that most ice creams now-a-days have vitamins etc (even more of an excuse to eat it!). I have a tub of vanilla ice cream, so I will have to have a bowl to celebrate National Ice Cream week ( I like to have mine with some canned peaches..yummy!).
Have a lovely day today :)

  15. A post on ice-cream my kind of reading! :-)
I was a bit disappointed the other day, at our usual ice cream establishment I requested a "99" for our son ( he's not as adventurous as us!) The 12 year old serving gave me a blank look and turned to an older member of staff to ask what I meant. She then returned to me and said that a flake would be 25p EXTRA!! I was amazed! isn't the flake an integral part of the "99"?!!!
Love the ice cream boat :-)
